Waxed cotton is a timeless and durable material that is considered pretty trouble-free. Here, less is more.

High friction areas to take note of are the elbows, underarms, and seams. These areas may lighten as the wax rubs off and is natural. When it’s time to reinforce the area, consider re-waxing.

Avoid:

+ Washer/dryers → These will strips the protective wax off the fabric.
+ Ironing/steaming+ Bleaching+ Artificial heat or open flames to dry
+ Dry cleaning

Keep It Simple

When it’s time to clean, don’t overdo it.

Step one:
Start with a brush or damp rag to gently brush off or buff off any dried-mud or dirt.

Step two:
If traces of a stain or marks remain, use plain cold water to wet the stained areas and gently brush the area with a scrub brush or buff it with a damp rag again and let it dry.

Step three:
If a stubborn stain persists, use a scrub brush or damp rag along with a small amount of lukewarm water and mild bar soap or gentle soap to spot clean the problem area. Finish with re-waxing the area. ( More on this in the repair section. )

Embrace the Patina and Lived-In Aesthetic

Waxed canvas undergoes a beautiful transformation with age, through use and exposure, collectively known as patina. These markings are not defects but rather affirmations of your garment’s journey.

Crease & folds:
Regular use naturally leads to creases and folds in different areas of the wax coating, imbuing the fabric with distinct lines and patterns.

Fading:
Exposure to sunlight and the elements gradually fades the original color of waxed canvas, resulting in a softer, more muted tone preferred by many.

Textural changes:
As the wax coating becomes more supple with time, the material feels softer and more pliable.

Restore & Protect

Small repairs and touch-ups go a long way. 
How to determine:
Spray water on the surface of your garment; if it beads up, it’s still well coated, if water soaks in, it’s time to re-wax.


What You’ll Need:

- Wax bar for waxed cotton
- Clean, lint-free cloths or sponges
- Hairdryer
 
Step-by-Step Guide:

1 - Prepare Your Jacket
Brush off any loose dirt. Make sure the jacket is completely dry. Do not use soap or detergent.

2 - Apply Wax
Rub the wax bar onto the fabric in long, even strokes. Focus on high-wear areas like seams, cuffs, and shoulders. The fabric will darken as you apply the wax, helping you track your coverage.

3 - Set with Heat
Use a hairdryer on a low or medium setting to gently warm the waxed areas. This helps the wax absorb into the fabric for a smooth, even finish.

4 - Remove Excess & Cure
Wipe off any excess wax with a clean cloth. Hang the jacket in a warm, dry place for at least 24 hours to let the wax cure.

5 - Check & Reapply
Once cured, water should bead up on the surface. Reapply wax every 12-24 months or as needed, depending on how often you wear it.

Furthering Longevity

Proper storage is vital to prevent your waxed pieces from losing their shape and water-repellancy.

Short-term:
Hang with a sturdy hanger in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space.

Long-term:
Place inside a breathable garment bag to protect it from dust.

Avoid:
+ Tightly packed closets
+ Damp environments → Moisture can damage the waxed fabric and cause mold growth.
+ Super hot cars or spaces for extended periods of time.
